Sign On to Delay Metro Vote on Budget Cuts
We just got word that the Metro is planning to vote on some major budget cuts at a board meeting tomorrow — before hearing from the public. Don’t let this happen! Sign on to urge Metro to delay the vote and allow for public opinion.
According to the Coalition For Smarter Growth:
Metro faces a $40 million deficit in this year’s operating budget (ending June 2010), and to address the shortfall, Metro is proposing serious service cuts. We are concerned about and opposed to:
- Increasing wait times from 20 to 30 minutes after 9:30pm on Orange, Blue, Yellow & Green lines; and from 15 to 20 minutes on Red line.
- Reducing 8-car trains to 6-car trains during rush hour.
- Bus service cuts that will leave many riders waiting long periods in the cold and rain.
We are concerned about the effect these cuts will have on the public sexual harassment. We know from the experiences we’ve received that many public sexual harassment incidents happen on crowded trains or buses and while individuals are waiting for a bus or train. We anticipate that if Metro votes “yes” on these budget cuts there will be a rise in the number of public sexual harassment cases on our trains and buses. Don’t let this happen and sign on to urge Metro to delay tomorrow’s vote!
