“I started yelling at him to shut up and he got more vulgar.”
Location: Takoma (218 Cedar St. NW)
Time: Evening Rush Hour (3:30pm-7:30pm)
May of 2016, I had a cast on my leg and was using a knee scooter to get home from the metro. Someone in his truck in the 7-11 parking lot, hollered, “Don’t worry, it’s gonna be okay, you’re looking good.” I smiled, as I’m fine with general encouragements and his tone was positive at first. Then he continued to describe how happy he would be if he were my husband and go into great detail about what he would do with his hands. As I was only had the one leg and my knee was on the wheels, I couldn’t divert left or right or turn around with any kind of alacrity. Forward was my option and it was uphill a little slowing me down. I started yelling at him to shut up and he got more vulgar. I ducked into Busboys and Poets to be sure he had moved on. I feel for those who are permanently disabled or have limited mobility, as I felt trapped because I was so slow and immobile.
